On this day in Iowa weather history...

1881: The earliest Iowa snowfall on record affected most of the western half of the state during the morning hours. Rain had been falling early in the morning and as colder air moved in just after sunrise, snow began to mix with the rain at times. At Sibley and Sac City the snow did not accumulate, but at Algona an observer noted that the ground was covered and that tree branches were broken by the weight of the snow, which all melted by noon. Remarkably several inches of snow were reported in eastern Pottawattamie County around Stuart and Avoca. This is the earliest date of the Fall on which any snow has ever been reliably recorded in Iowa.
