24 Nov 2010 Extended Forecast

...A MIX OF WINTER WEATHER IS MOVING ACROSS IOWA...

A LINE OF SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS FROM JEFFERSON TO WINTERSET IS MOVING NORTHEAST AT 25 MPH. THESE SHOWERS AND ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS ARE PRODUCING A VARIETY OF PRECIPITATION FROM RAIN AND SLEET TO A MIX OF RAIN...SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN. THOSE LOCATIONS WITH THUNDERSTORMS CAN ALSO EXPECT SMALL HAIL. BEHIND THIS LINE WE CAN EXPECT A PERIOD OF DRIZZLE OR FREEZING DRIZZLE.A WARM FRONT LOCATED OVER THE IOWA/MO BORDER WILL TRACK INTO POW CTY LATER THIS MORNING. RAIN/FREEZING RAIN IS DEVELOPING SOUTH AND EAST OF OTTUMWA AND WILL PUSH INTO THE AREA THRU THIS MORNING. EVEN AS SURFACE TEMPS WILL BE NEAR OR SLIGHTLY ABOVE 32F BEFORE THE ONSET, RAIN WILL FREEZE ON OBJECTS AND SOME ROAD SURFACES....AS TEMPS MOVE INTO THE HIGH 30'S THIS AFTERNOON AS THE WARM FRONT PUSHES JUST TO OUR NORTH, EXPECT A MORE SHOWERY TYPE PRECIP - SPARKING ISOLATED POCKETS OF RAIN MIXING WITH SLEET. MAY SEE ANOTHER ROUND OF ICE GLAZING ON SURFACES SHORTLY AFTER SUNSET - THEN THE RAIN WILL CHANGE TO ALL LT SNOW AROUND 9PM TONITE, AND LASTING THRU THE EARLY MORNING HOURS OF THANKSGIVING.

LOW PRESSURE WILL TRACK QUICKLY EAST TODAY AND WILL APPROACH THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER VALLEY BY THIS EVENING. PRECIPITATION IS FORECAST TO DEVELOP AHEAD OF THE LOW DURING THE DAY WITH A VARIETY OF WEATHER EXPECTED. RAIN IS FORECAST ALONG THE INTERSTATE 80
CORRIDOR AND TO THE SOUTH. MEANWHILE...A MIXTURE OF LIGHT FREEZING RAIN...SLEET AND SNOW IS FORECAST FROM NORTHERN IOWA INTO ADJACENT AREAS OF MINNESOTA AND WISCONSIN. NUMEROUS WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ARE IN EFFECT TODAY INTO THIS EVENING FOR ICE AND SNOW ACCUMULATIONS IN THESE AREAS. THE STORM WILL MOVE QUICKLY EAST TONIGHT WITH DRIER AND MUCH COLDER AIR POURING INTO MUCH OF THE REGION. THESE DRY CONDITIONS ARE THEN FORECAST TO REMAIN FROM THANKSGIVING THROUGH THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND. TEMPERATURES WILL START OUT WELL BELOW NORMAL ON THANKSGIVING BUT GRADUALLY MODERATE THROUGH THE WEEKEND TO MORE SEASONAL READINGS.

WE HAVE US A TYPICAL LA NINA WINTER SETTING UP. IF YOU LOOK BACK AT THE TALKWEATHER WINTER FORECAST ISSUED ON 7 SEPTEMBER, YOU'LL SEE THAT I HAD US ON THE EDGE HEAVY SNOW AND AN ICY MIX THRU OUT THE WINTER. IT'S HAPPENING. WARM AIR TRACKING NORTH IS CLASHING WITH COLD TRYING TO PUSH SOUTH. THE BATTLE GROUND? IOWA....

Turkey Day Fun Forecast:

Turkeys will finish thawing Thanksgiving morning, then warm in the oven to a high near 190 in the afternoon. The kitchen will turn hot and humid, and if you bother the cook, be ready for a severe squall or a cold shoulder. During the late-afternoon and early-evening hours, the cold front of a knife will slice through the turkey and cause it to accumulate 1-2 inches on plates. Mashed potatoes will drift across one side while cranberry sauce creates slippery spots on the other, especially if it mixes in as you turn to the green bean casserole. Please pass the gravy. A weight watch has been issued for the entire area and we expect intervals of indigestion, with increasing stuffiness around the beltway. During the evening, the turkey will diminish and taper to leftovers before dropping to a low of 34 in the refrigerator. Looking ahead to Friday and Saturday: high pressure to eat sandwiches; flurries of leftovers can be expected both days with a 50% chance of scattered soup during the midday hours. We expect a warming trend baste on where soup develops.
