19 March 2011 Extended Forecast

Today is the Official Last Day of Winter....But don't get in a hurry.  This is Iowa - Not Miami.  Click Here and read about the Equinox.

I've been promising the rain , and over the next 4 days we'll get our fair share.  A typical Spring weather pattern is in place.  Strong South/Southwest winds will usher in above seasonal temps and above normal rainfall.  Enjoy today with temps in mid 50's.  Showers will move in later tonight and persist thru early week.  Monday will show us a brief break in the rain and temps push to near 60 before the next system tracks out of the SW into Central Iowa.  A conservative approach to the rainfall over the next 4 days points to around an inch.  I wouldn't be surprised if 2" was the norm in the Southeastern 1/3 of Iowa.......

By mid-week?  Here we go.  I've been forecasting a possible showstopper storm for the past 3 weeks.  It's going to be a close call for early Spring.  Cold air is pooling over Southern Canada and will sink into Mn and Northern Iowa late Tues.  A rain/snow line will be thru the center of Iowa.  A strong northerly wind will push the cooler temps southward resulting in what looks to be Snowshowers for POW Cty.  4+ inches of Snow is NOT out of the question North of HWY 30......

On this day in Iowa weather history...

1923: A late winter blast of bitterly cold air brought temperatures down to record levels across Iowa. Many stations recorded by far their lowest temperatures ever for so late in the season. At Des Moines the low was -10 F and only once has a subzero temperature ever been recorded on a later date, that being a low of -1 F on March 26, 1964. At Waterloo the low was -17 F and the lowest temperature ever recorded on a later date is -5 F. At Sioux City the low of -2 F makes this the latest date on record of a subzero temperature at that location. Even during the afternoon hours the temperature failed to rise out of the teens across about the northeastern third of Iowa and did not rise above freezing anywhere in the state. Other reported morning low temperatures included -18 F at Iowa Falls, Logan, and Webster City, -19 F at Fayette and Tipton, -20 F at Belle Plaine, and an incredible -22 F at Boone which is the coldest temperature ever recorded anywhere in Iowa so late in the season.
