Ghost Towns in Iowa:  When Iowa was just begining there were many towns and villages being planned and built.

A lot of those towns became very important business areas. They had many types of businesses and some did prosper for a time. While still others were no more then a town on paper. Some of the businesses were Grist Mills, Lumber Mills, Lumber Yards, General Stores, Harness Shops, Blacksmiths and clothing stores just to name a few.

Some towns were built and doing fairly well but when the railroads came through and located miles from where the towns were located, they packed up and moved with them. Since the railroads meant business and their products could be moved in and out of town easier they moved to where the railroad was situated and the people gradually moved with them and the town would disappear.

Sometimes river towns would disappear because river traffic was not as good as sending product and traveling by railroad had become important they gradually moved with them.

The names they gave the towns and villages were many times a reflection on where the pioneers had came from or maybe named them after the area they settled in. Drawing upon the name of a river, grove of trees, a bluff or other things from their new surroundings. They also named the towns after themselves or even a loved one who had died during their trip to Iowa.

Some towns are now just a corn field, pasture or timber  with nothing left to show that the town ever existed.

Poweshiek County is no exception.  Over the next couple of weeks, I will highlight the 28 known Ghost Towns in Poweshiek County.  Some are obvious - some may not be.  You may be living In or Around one of them and not even know it...........

GHOST TOWN #1:  BEAR CREEK.  A post office (1849-65) near the east edge of Bear Creek Township on the south side of Bear Creek, about one mile northeast of the present town of Brooklyn.
