Main focus today will be a Cool Front that extends from Central Mn to NW Iowa, thru Neb and into Central Colorado. Isolated Showers/Storms will develop ahead of the front as it moves into Central Iowa this afternoon - the front will stall near Hwy 34, with Tstorms becoming more numerous to north of the stalled front. There may some severe weather fire this afternoon and evening north of the I-80 corridor - mainly confined to an area from Belle Plaine to Waterloo, to SW WI, to Davenport, to Cedar Rapids. 1-2 Inches of rain will fall in this area. Expect up to 1/2" in Pow County and areas south and east thru midnite tonite.
The focus then switches to a much stronger cold front pushing southward into Iowa thru the day Saturday. Right now, it's looking the front will have moved thru Pow County by late afternoon - taking the showers/storms with it. There will be pockets of heavier rainfall associated - timing is tough. Best shot at heavier rainfall appears early morning Saturday - then again along the front later in the afternoon (3-5pm time frame). Heaviest rainfall should be in Eastern/Southeastern Iowa where at least an inch of rain will fall thru the day. Pow County: Up to 3/4", giving us a well needed 1+ inch of rain over the next 24-36 hours.
The cold will have moved well to the south by Sunday and cool Canadian air will have pushed into Central Iowa. Expect a breezy, cool day - feeling more like early October rather than early September. Labor Day is looking real nice. This pattern will hold thru next week. Expect Dry, and seasonally cool.
