Saturday, 3 Sept 2011 Extended Pow County Forecast

Tstorms moved thru northern Pow County and northward this morning.  Severe Tstorms were located on a line from east of Marshalltown to Waterloo - producing wind gusts to 60mph.  The storms have since moved northeast to just north of Cedar Rapids.  Rain and rainshowers exist from Des Moines into northwest Iowa - moving eastward - expect them in Pow County around noon.

A strong cold front will be sweeping thru Pow County this afternoon and tonight.  Tstorms will be ahead of the front today, gradually ending tonight as the front pushes southeast. Some of the storms could be severe - especially to our east and southeast.  Rainfall amounts should reach 1/2" in Pow County, with up to an inch or more under the heavier Tstorms east and south.  Beginning Sunday and lasting through the remainder of the Extended Forecast, a dry and fall-like air mass will settle in over Iowa.

Today 3rd:  Isolated Tstorms will become more widespread thru the afternoon hours.  Some of the storms may be severe - with damaging winds by 3pm.  Expect between 1/4" and 1/2" rain.  High Temp 82.

Tonite:  Isolated Tshowers will end by 8pm.  Winds will have shifted out of the NW.  Expect less than 1/4" additional rainfall.

Sunday thru Friday 4th-9th:  Dry and Cooler with temps in the Low 70's increasing to the mid/high 70's late week. Winds will be from the north gusting to 25mph Sunday before going light and variable Monday thru Friday.

Saturday to Saturday 10th-17th:  Continued Dry.  Temps 75-80.

On this day in Iowa weather history...

Des Moines set its all-time September record with a high of 101 F on the 3rd, reached 100 F on the 6th, then tied the record with 101 F again on the 7th. These are the only occasions of triple digit heat on record at Des Moines in the month of September. Other reported high temperatures on the 3rd included 102 F at Onawa, 103 F at Corning and Indianola, and 104 F at Glenwood and Logan.
